Chinese authorities said on Sunday that it is baseless speculation to say that an "ultimatum" had been given to force relatives of those who died in a fatal high-speed train crash in east China to agree to accept government compensation.

周日中國政府表示，鐵道部向動車事故遇難者家屬下達“最后通牒”、強迫其接受政府賠償一事純屬子虛烏有。

文中的ultimatum一詞即為“最后通牒”的意思，源于拉丁語，指談判破裂前“最后的話”。在diplomatic negotiation（外交談判）破裂前，一般一國會就某個問題用書面通知對方，限定在一定時間內(nèi)接受其條件，否則就采取某種coercive measures（強制措施），比如threat of force（武力威脅），economic blockade（經(jīng)濟封鎖），sever diplomatic relations（斷絕邦交）等等。

Ultimatum如今已不限于外交領(lǐng)域，日常生活和商務(wù)往來中也時常會用到這個詞，而且一般都以dispatch/deliver/give an ultimatum to…的形式出現(xiàn)。例如：He gave his daughter an ultimatum: unless she stopped taking drugs he would throw her out of the house.（他給女兒下了最后通牒：她要是不戒毒，就把她從家里趕出去。）
