BEIJING - Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei on Friday summed up China's diplomatic achievements in 2011, and said China will adhere to the path of peaceful development.
Amid a complex and dynamic international situation in 2011, China boosted relations with all sides in a steady manner, Hong said at a daily press briefing, the last one for this year.
China properly handled major emergencies and sensitive questions, and managed to preserve stable, thriving and harmonious relationships with neighboring countries, Hong said.
China consolidated and enhanced its traditional friendships with developing countries and engaged in the reform of international systems in a pro-active manner, he noted.
China safeguarded the security and rights of Chinese nationals and juridical persons living abroad and carried out public and cultural diplomacy, took comprehensive preventive measures against external economic risks, and defended its national sovereignty, security and development interests, he said.
In 2012, the general situation of world economy will remain severe, Hong said, noting that many factors of instability and uncertainty -- whether as expected or out of expectation -- still exist.
"With big powers, we will enhance mutual trust, expand cooperation, properly handle differences and push for the steady development of bilateral relations," he said.
In regards to neighboring countries, China will uphold good neighborly friendships and reinforce cooperation, he said.
China will also promote relations with developing countries and strengthen unity and cooperation with them, he said.
China will play its role as a responsible major country on the international stage, join international efforts in coping with the financial crisis, and promote fiscal, financial, economic, trade and investment cooperation with other countries, Hong said.
"We will unswervingly adhere to the road of peaceful development, stick to the opening-up strategy of mutual benefit and win-win situations, preserve world peace and promote common development," he said.
