WASHINGTON - A US Navy nuclear-powered submarine collided with an Aegis cruiser Saturday during their routine operations off the East Coast, the US Navy said.
The USS San Jacinto, an Aegis-class missile cruiser, and the submarine USS Montpelier collided at about 3:30 pm local time, causing the damage of the sonar dome on the cruiser but no injuries, according to a statement from the Navy.
The incident caused no damage to the submarine's nuclear-powered propulsion plant, said the Navy. Both vessels were operating under their own power.
The Navy said the collision was under investigation, but refused to give more specific information on where the accident occurred.
Both of the two ships were based at Norfolk, Virginia, and part of a strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.
