        What's the buzz

        (China Daily) Updated: 2014-03-03 08:12

With the annual sessions of the National People's Congress and the National Committee of the Chinese Political Consultative Conference beginning, what are the issues that concern you most this year? What kind of proposals would you raise if you were an NPC deputy?

I was born and raised in a small village by the side of the Yangtze River in Wuhan, Hubei province and my biggest concern is the pollution in rural regions. When I go home I can see piles of rubbish everywhere in the village, while industrial pollution has turned our rivers into stinking sewers that smell bad. We dare not even eat at home because we don't trust the crops that grow in the fields. If I were an NPC deputy I would move to urge the State to better fight rural pollution.

Before Spring Festival my mother, a migrant worker, was sent to hospital due to heart disease and the total cost exceeded 10,000 yuan ($1,634). She had the insurance introduced by the State but it didn't cover my mother because she wasn't treated in a local hospital. Our representatives at the NPC and CPPCC should speak for migrant workers who are vulnerable in the face of a critical illness.

Anybody in Beijing, Tianjin or surrounding regions knows clearly how bad the air quality is. As a resident of Tianjin, environmental protection is my biggest concern, and I hope the representatives at the NPC and CPPCC can accelerate efforts to cut toxic emissions and save energy. We cannot afford to live in smog any more.

Since I came to my university in Yunnan, I have become aware that the social gaps really are too wide in our country. There are too many poverty-stricken villages in Yunnan where the children cannot receive good education. The kids don't even have sweaters for the winter. That is in stark contrast to the prosperous metropolises in some regions. I hope the State can offer some social security to them and take efforts to improve their living standards, which can better accelerate the development of the whole nation.

Of all the problems in people's daily lives, my biggest concern is about employment during the process of urbanization. Only stable jobs will attract more migrant workers to the cities and make them stay there, which in turn will promote local development, thus forming a virtuous circle.

        CHEN DUWEN, Changsha, Hunan province

I come from a rural region, but now study in a relatively big city. That granted me an overview of the gap between the urban and rural regions and the imbalances among different regions. The social gaps are already very big and it is time to start the process of narrowing them. The State should do more for the poor population, instead of putting icing on the cake by investing enormously in the metropolises.

The ongoing anti-corruption campaign has effectively prevented corruption from spreading in many regions, and we hope they can do the job further at the grassroots level, so that the flies are hunted as well as the tigers. Only with corrupt officials being removed from posts that directly serve the people, can ordinary people better enjoy the fruits of development.

As a student facing graduation, if I were a representative I would to move to increase the punishments on companies that cheat in employing and using college students as cheap labor in the name of internships. That would help prevent students from falling into traps.
