HONG KONG - The current security measures in place for the upcoming Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong were appropriate, Hong Kong's Chief Executive Donald Tsang said Monday on a visit to the local Olympic Village.

The local police will continue to review the security situation and will enhance the arrangements if necessary, Tsang added.

The current security arrangements "are stringent and in line with the Olympic Games' standard," Tsang said as he visited the Olympic Village in the company of Hong Kong Olympic and Paralympic Village Mayor Elsie Leung.

Tsang also said there was a need for the balance between ensuring safety for the equestrian events and minimizing the inconvenience caused to spectators.

Hong Kong is a co-host city for the Beijing Olympics and the equestrian events of the Games will be held in the southern Chinese special administrative region in August.

When asked whether the local hot weather will affect athletes' and horses' performance, Tsang said the previous Olympic host city of Athens also has hot summer and that athletes must prepare for different situations as competitions involve unexpected factors.
