Beijing teacher Zhao Zhiwei has been recommended as a prospective torchbearer for Beijing 2008 because of her work educating students about the significance of organizing a "Green Olympics".
Zhao, a Young Pioneer counselor from the Second Primary School of Zuojiazhuang in Beijing's Chaoyang District, has been named as a candidate by Olympic worldwide partner Coca Cola.
Since 2005, a water-saving campaign has been conducted among middle school and primary school students in Beijing by Coca Cola.
During the campaign, Zhao composed scores of songs to promote environmental protection and water-saving concepts among her students.
In 2006, she set up a "Doctor Water Studio" in the school. Students followed suit by holding water-related events at school.
"We are compiling a test book on water right now," said Zhao. "The draft version has been worked out."
During this year's water-saving campaign, entitled "Saving a barrel of water, the flowers will smile", about 250,000 students from 1,400 primary and middle schools nationwide got involved.
Through watering flowers with recycled water, students learned how to economize on a daily basis and promote the concept to their parents.
Ten counselors were named "Green Ambassadors" this year and Zhao was selected as the pick of the bunch.
