On Feb 4, 2012, a beautiful frosty scene appeared on the banks of the Yalu River in Dandong, Liaoning province. A number of citizens came to the riverside to appreciate this rare sight.
Despite the cold wind, rime added a unique charm to the silent Yalu River Park partly frozen due to midwinter temperatures. Tall trees, bushes and grass were covered in a white blanket of snow. The crystal ice branches, silver twinkling rime and clear water in the Yalu River constituted the tranquil wonderland scenery. People took photos on the grass, under the trees or at the side of parterre, enjoying the fun brought about by ice and snow.
At about 10:00 am in the morning, the temperature began to rise and the rime dropped piece by piece.
Rime, also called "Shugua" or "Ice flowers", is a meteorological wonder formed when mist and water vapor is frozen on the branches or leaves of trees. Rime can also help clean air to improve the air quality.
