The Taipingwan Scenic Zone is a key spot in the Yalu River National Scenic Area, 50 kilometers from the city of Dandong city, 98 km from the Qingshangou scenic zone, and a neighbor of Shuozhou prefecture in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), across the river. Tourists here get a view of the Taipingwan dam, a major water conservation project on the Yalu River, and learn something about the entire hydropower generation process. They can even venture over onto the Korean territory to experience its folk customs and enjoy the delicacies of the region.
The Taipingwan power plant, part of a large hydropower project involving China and the DPRK, was built in 1979 and has been operating for 18 years. It is located in the town of Taipingwan, 40km from the city of Dandong, along the lower reaches of the Yalu river. It is 30km from the Shuifeng power plant and Changdian power station upstream. It is managed by the large Taipingwan power group, which also oversees the Changdian power station. The two have six hydroelectric generators for a total of 340MW, generating one billion kwh of electric power a year.
