        Mainland actor bags HK award

The Hong Kong Film Critics Society has named mainland actor Wang Xueqi (pictured) as the best actor of 2009.

Winners were announced on Monday, with the 63-year-old bagging the honor for his performance in the action blockbuster Bodyguards and Assassins, even though the film features at least six Hong Kong stars in lead roles.

Wang is the second best-actor winner from the mainland in the awards' 16-year history, after Jet Li in 2006.

The Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards recognize Chinese-language film talent from a critical perspective. Winners are determined by votes cast by members over several rounds.

Wang, whose acting career spans two decades, has risen to prominence only in recent years. In 2008, he appeared as a supporting character in Chen Kaige's Forever Enthralled. His performance was so impressive that some critics said he had eclipsed the lead role.

In other awards categories, KJ: Music and Life about piano prodigy Wong Ka-jeng, was named best film. Overheard co-directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong shared the best director prize. Best actress went to Kara Hui for At the End of Daybreak.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 3.
