Legislator calls for drug prohibition law

A Chinese legislator has proposed to enact a drug prohibition law in order to effectively ban drug abuse, marketing and trafficking.

Yang Meixi, a deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislative body, said at the ongoing NPC annual session that the campaign of fighting drug-related crimes does not produce satisfactory results due to the lack of a good anti-drug law, although judicial organs have enforced relevant laws and waged fierce battles against drug-related criminal activities.

Yang, also chief of a public security branch in Taiyuan, capital of North China's Shanxi Province, said it is difficult for them to crack down on drug-related crimes effectively as the current criminal law is not applicable in determining the seriousness of such crimes.

In addition, the current criminal law forbids the evidence collected through various technical means from being presented at the court.

"We call for a drug prohibition law in order to clamp down on drug-related crimes more effectively," he said.
