        Jailed Palestinian leader wins primaries

ailed Palestinian uprising leader Marwan Barghouti and other younger activists were the biggest vote-getters in primaries of the ruling Fatah movement, according to preliminary results Saturday.

The primary was emerging as major victory of the Barghouti-led "young guard" over Fatah oldtimers who for years had refused to budge from leadership positions. The internal election will determine the list of candidates for Jan. 5 parliament elections.

Barghouti is serving multiple life terms in an Israeli prison after being convicted of involvement in attacks that killed five Israelis. He won some 30,000 votes in the Ramallah district, where 40,000 Fatah members were eligible to vote.
