PM links new deal for cities to trade links with China and India (CP) Updated: 2005-10-01 15:05
VANCOUVER - Prime Minister Paul Martin is linking his so-called "New Deal for
Cities" to Canada's competitiveness in emerging markets like China and India. CP
reported.
He told civic politicians at the Union of B.C. Municipalities meeting in
Vancouver that cities play a crucial role in the global economy. The prime
minister also promised that small communities won't be overlooked in Ottawa's
strategy to improve Canadian infrastructure.
Martin suggests the rise of China and India is key to Canada's future.
He also took another swipe at the United States for ignoring NAFTA decisions
on softwood lumber.
Martin says the continued integration of the North American economy makes it
important for countries to follow the rules and the U.S. defiance of NAFTA sends
the wrong message to the world.
