A woman suicide bomber attacked an Iraqi army recruitment center Wednesday, killing at least six people and wounding 30 in a northern city where coalition forces had routed insurgents in a major offensive this month, reported the Associated Press.

An US helicopter hovers as plumes of black smoke rise from the Green Zone, the heavily guarded area where foreign embassies and Iraq's parliament are based, in Baghdad, Iraq, Tuesday Sept. 27 2005. A car bomber penetrated the heavily fortified Green Zone Tuesday but was stopped by U.S. Marines before being able to detonate the vehicle, a military spokesman said. U.S. troops destroyed the car in a controlled blast and detained the bomber. [AP]

The attacker, who was wearing men's clothing, detonated hidden explosives containing metal balls while standing in line with job applicants at the first of three checkpoints outside the center, said Maj. Jamil Mohammed Sadr, the Iraqi army commander based there.
