        Hard life of Guangzhou mermaid
        (chinanews)
        Updated: 2005-03-23 11:12

Do mermaids really exist? With their active imaginations and love of fairy tales many children answer "yes!" Guangzhou Ocean World expect to return to your childhood fantasies.

The mermaids frolic on the water's surface.

As part of a new show, mermaids at the theme park dance in azure seawater, among multicolored coral.

Bright music accompanies their graceful movements; they come to the surface, and dive to the hidden depths, performing alone one moment and as a group the next.

The show began in May 2003 with five beautiful, young women. Without a reference point in reality, the mermaids use their imaginations to design every movement, blending rhythm, timing and practice to create a cooperative dynamic.

For many, entering the water is a form of amusement, but for these women, it is a career. The most difficult aspect of water performance is balancing ear pressure.

However, they face more painful challenges—if they catch cold they still have to perform. Absorbed in the fairy tale, few will imagine the hard lives that these young creatures of the water must face.
