The foreign trade volume of the inland province of Guizhou increased 53.8 percent year-on-year to hit US$1.51 billion last year.

Figures from the provincial commerce bureau show that the increase rate ranked the third among 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions on the Chinese mainland.

The trade volume included US$867 million in export, up 47.4 percent over 2003. The increase rate was 12 percent higher than the national average. Guizhou's imports totaled US$647 million last year, a year-on-year rise of 63.3 percent, which was 27.3 percentage points higher than the national average.

Exports by collectively-run and private businesses have become a new growth area for Guizhou's foreign trade.

The trade volume done by collectively-run businesses grew 99.3 percent year-on-year to reach US$105.2 million last year. Trade volume of private businesses shot up by 254.6 percent year-on-year to hit US$102.76 million last year.

The combined trade volume of collectively-run and private businesses accounted for 13.7 percent of the province's total for last year, 5.4 percentage points higher than that for 2003.
