Rebels attack Iraq police station, 13 killed
        (Agencies)
        Updated: 2004-12-28 16:30

Insurgents attacked an Iraqi police station in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit on Tuesday, killing 13 officers and wounding two, police said.

"They attacked with many weapons," Major Ali al-Tikriti said. It was not clear if the guerrillas suffered any casualties in the attack at about 7:30 a.m. (11:30 p.m. EST Monday).

A U.S. military spokesman in Tikrit said he was unaware of the incident.

Since Saddam was captured near Tikrit one year ago, the city has been relatively quiet compared to other parts of the Sunni Arab north, although roadside bombs and other attacks do occur.

Iraq's new, U.S.-trained security forces are prime targets for Sunni insurgents bent on wrecking next month's election and police stations have been attacked many times before.
