China protests roundup of restaurant workers
A Chinese consulate official said today that the office is looking into the treatment of about 50 Chinese nationals who were questioned by immigration officials last week in what appears to be a human trafficking case. Yang Chenqi is an attorney with the Chinese consulate in Houston. He said the immigrants who were in the country legally told him they were rounded up at two Grand China Buffet restaurants in El Paso where they worked. He said they told him they were illegally detained for five days and questioned by U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement said she couldn't comment on the case but added that the workers were not detained. |
