Cold front from Siberia brings chilly days
Winter-weather will blanket big swathes of China Tuesday. A Siberian cold front moving eastward across the eastern parts of Northwest China, North China and Northeast China beginning today, is expected to send temperatures plummeting 10 to 14 degrees C from yesterday's average temperature of 13-14 degree C, China Central Meteorological Observatory said. North and Northeast China residents basking in unseasonally warm weather will find themselves reaching for their woolly hats and heavy coats because of the strongest cold air current of the season. The currents are expected to last until Friday across most parts of China. The mercury is expected to drop 10 to 12 degrees C in Northeast China's Heilongjiang, Liaoning and Jilin provinces and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as the cold currents produce rain, sleet and strong winds. It will become rainy, foggy and windy in eastern parts of Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Yunnan. Drizzle and medium-rain are likely to sweep northern parts of the Yangtze River-Huaihe River valleys on Thursday and Friday. Gale-force winds will sweep China's sea regions during the next three days. The cold spell began to affect the Chinese capital of Beijing yesterday as residents began to move under cloudy and windy conditions. During the next three days, the temperature is expected to drop 4 to 6 degrees C on average with moderate winds. "Current temperatures in Beijing are 3 to 4 degrees higher than the average year," said a forecaster from the Beijing Meteorological Observatory. Cold air forming in Siberia will come and cool the capital city down, he said. Rain and sleet remain a possibility. The end of the warm weather means cold and flu season has dawned. "Flu and colds are just more common in winter months because that's when the virus spreads," said a doctor surnamed Wang, who is working at the Beijing-based Anzhen Hospital. People are more likely to catch colds when the temperature changes dramatically, she said. # |
