Car bomb explodes near Baghdad airport
        (Agencies)
        Updated: 2004-11-03 16:02

A car bomb blew up near a U.S. military convoy on the main road to Baghdad airport on Wednesday, causing no American casualties, the U.S. military said.

The car exploded not far from the first U.S. checkpoint on the airport road in southwestern Baghdad, setting fire to a U.S. military Humvee vehicle, witnesses said.

"A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device exploded in western Baghdad near an airport checkpoint at about 8:30 a.m. (12:30 a.m. EST)," a U.S. military statement said.

"No multi-national force soldiers were injured in the attack."

It said there were reports of Iraqi civilian casualties, but the health ministry said it was contacting hospitals to check if there were casualties.

Smoke billowed from the damaged vehicles.
