China condemns US on Taiwan issue
China has lodged "solemn representations" to the United States for allowing the Formosan Association of Public Affairs to host a seminar on Capitol Hill on Taiwan's constitution making, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said Saturday. Kong said in a press release that despite China's firm objections, the United States allowed a few Taiwan independence organizations to host the seminar on Taiwan constitutional reform and "allowed Lee Teng-hui, a chief 'Taiwan independence' separatist, to spread separatist remarks" on the occasion. Such behavior violates the repeated commitments of US leaders, who promised to abide by the one-China policy, observe the three Sino-US joint communiques and stand against Taiwan independence, the spokesman said. "The behavior also sent dangerous signals to the Taiwan independence forces. China firmly opposes such behavior and has lodged serious representations with the US," he said. Kong said separatist activities are the biggest threat to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He said China has requested the US to "faithfully implement its commitments to China on the Taiwan issue, take actions to clear up the negative influence resulted in by the issue and stop sending wrong signals to the Taiwan independence forces to avoid causing new damage to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and Sino-US relations." Strong Indignation For "US-Taiwan Defense Conference" China expresses strong indignation for the recent convening of the "US-Taiwan defense conference" in the United States, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said Saturday. The United States and Taiwan recently held an annual defense conference in Arizona, during which it was reported that US Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Richard Lawless urged Taiwan to approve a special budget for a US arms deal. "The United States persisted on holding such a conference with Taiwan, regardless of China's firm opposition, and the US officer refered to so-called military threat from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan and urged Taiwan to purchase weapons from the US," Kong noted. China expresses its strong indignation and has lodged "solemn representation" to the United States, he said. Kong said that such a conference and the language Lawless used seriously infringed the commitment reiterated many times by the US government and leaders to adhere to the one-China policy, to follow the three Sino-US Joint Communiques and to oppose "Taiwan Independence". "This practice helped motivate the adventure of the 'Taiwan Independence' forces, and is greatly harmful for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," Kong said. Kong said China strongly urges the United States to recognize the harmfulness of its "wrong practice," to eliminate the negative effects of this practice, to stop military ties with Taiwan, to stop weapon sales to Taiwan and not to send wrong signals to the " Taiwan Independence" forces, so as to avoid harming the Sino-US relations. |
