A fire at an illegal clothing factory in the southern Chinese business center of Guangzhou killed five people and injured three, the government said Saturday.

The factory manager is being questioned by police following the disaster Friday, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing unidentified local officials.

The fire swept through the six-story building in 10 minutes on Friday morning, killing four men and a woman who were sleeping thered. It said firefighters helped 14 others to escape.

The cause was under investigation, the report said.

The factory manager said that because he lacked a license to operate, he had the employees work at night and sleep during the day, Xinhua said.
