        Border issue solved with Kyrgyzstan
        By Meng Yan (China Daily)
        Updated: 2004-09-22 01:00

China and Kyrgyzstan solved their border issue Tuesday and pledged to enhance economic and trade co-operation.

Visiting Premier Wen Jiabao and Nikolai Tanayev, prime minister of the Kyrgyzstan Republic signed a protocol on the border survey of their countries after their talks.

The two prime ministers also signed a compendium on their co-operation between 2004 and 2014, setting priorities and programmes in bilateral collaboration across the board in the coming decade.

Wen said both sides should work on concrete measures to implement the compendium.

He said the two governments should create a stable and favourable environment for co-operation between their enterprises and push for large co-operative projects in the fields of energy, mineral resources and telecommunications.

Wen proposed that two countries expand their co-operation, add more technological elements into their projects and improve trade structure to promote prosperity in the border areas. In particular, he said both should work more closely in trade, communication, ports and tourism

Tanayev said Kyrgyzstan would work together with China to implement the compendium and enhance bilateral co-operation in the construction of infrastructure facilities, energy, investment, border trade, security, culture and education.

The Chinese premier underscored that the joint action to crack down on terrorism, separatism and extremism including the force of East Turkistan is a major component of China-Kyrgyzstan co-operation in the security area.

He said both should take effective measures to ensure their people's personal and property safety.

Wen also suggested the two countries enhance co-operation in education, culture, health, sports and tourism to deepen the traditional friendship between the two peoples.

During his three-day stay in Bishkek, Wen will also attend the third meeting of the Shanghai Co-operation Organization among prime ministers from the member states on Thursday.

His five day tour will also take him to Moscow to attend the ninth annual regular meeting between Chinese and Russian prime ministers on Friday.

The Shanghai Co-operation Organization is an intergovernmental international organization founded in Shanghai in 2001 by six countries, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, representing about a quarter of the world population.

As prescribed in its charter, the organization takes joint actions to crack down on all forms of terrorism, separatism and extremism and other cross-border crimes as one of its basic tasks.

The organization also encourages its members to co-operate in all areas of their interest, such as politics, trade, economy, defence, environment, science and technology, education, energy, transportation, and finance.

The SCO secretariat, a permanent unit of administration which is responsible for co-ordinating activities within the framework of the organization, is based in Beijing.
