Real ready to line up Eriksson
        (The Sun)
        Updated: 2004-09-20 08:30

Sven Goran Eriksson is high on the shortlist to take over as Real Madrid manager.

Boss Jose Camacho offered his resignation yesterday after axeing David Beckham for the shock 1-0 defeat at Espanyol.

Real president Florentino Perez tried to recruit Eriksson last year and will go back in for him if he fails today to talk Camacho out of quitting.

A call from Madrid could be the answer to the FA’s prayers.

Soho Square bosses wanted to ditch Swede Eriksson after he flopped at Euro 2004 and scored in the sack with FA secretary Faria Alam.

But Eriksson’s £5million-a-year contract, which runs until 2008, would hand him a staggering £14m pay-off.

The FA would not have to pay Eriksson a penny if he decided to walk.

Joining Real would see him link up with England stars Beckham, Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate.
