An English website designed to help people at home and abroad gain a better understanding of China was launched in Beijing Thursday.

"China Daily-Sohu English" (http://english.sohu.com) is the first English web platform co-built by the country's key media website chinadaily.com.cn and commercial portal Sohu.com.cn.

The new website will offer world news, economic news and information on sports, life and entertainment in English.

It will also provide English lovers with English study materials and services, as it aims to establish the largest English forum in China.

Zhao Qizheng, minister of the State Council Information Office, sent a congratulatory letter to China Daily-Sohu English, in which he said that it is a very significant step in introducing China to English speaking netizens at home and abroad.

He hoped that the website would break ground in reporting China to the world.

Zhu Yinghuang, editor-in-chief of China Daily, said the co-establishment of the new English platform will offer more timely information and better services to Chinese bilingual readers who want to know more about the world and those overseas readers who wish to learn more about China.
