For the first time ever, the International Association of Athletics Federations or IAAF is inviting the public to participate in the vote for Athlete of the Year.

People will be able to pick their choice for Athlete of the Year from the Top 15 in the IAAF World Rankings by going to the IAAF home page on Monday. China Radio International reported Monday.

Chinese flying man Liu Xiang is in the candidates list. The IAAF calls his Olympic 110m hurdles a true championship performance which represents the start of a new era in Asian athletics.

Chinese Olympic medallist Xing Huina who beat more favoured rivals to win the 10,000 meter title in Athens is also in the women's voting list.

The voting will close At 8:00 am on Friday, and a shortlist of 5 will then be presented to a Panel of the IAAF, who will make a final selection of Athlete of the Year after considering the results achieved at the World Athletics Final.

The winner of the Athlete of the Year award will then be announced during the 2004 World Athletics Gala at the Grimaldi Forum, Monte-Carlo, on Sunday night.
