Bus accidents kill 24, more injured
Two severe bus accidents occurred last week in the provinces of Northwest China's Sichuan and East China's Fujian, killing 24 passengers and injuring another 33. A bus fell into a 10-metre deep river valley on Wednesday afternoon in Shifang in Sichuan Province, killing four, including the driver and injuring 16 passengers, a local newspaper said. After the accident, doctors from the Shifang People's Hospital formed a medical team to treat the injured. Another four passengers died on the hospital on Thursday morning, the West China Cosmopolitan Daily said. Most of the 20 passengers on the bus were teachers who had attended an educational meeting at a nearby scenic spot before the tragedy, officials said. In another accident, a bus suddenly rolled off a cliff in the county of Lianjiang in Fujian Province on Monday. Sixteen people died and 11 were injured, according to an official with the State Administration of Work Safety. The capacity of the bus was 26 people, although it carried 27 passengers when the accident occurred, officials said. The causes of the accidents are under investigation, officials said. |
