Hubei sets up first legal aid center for migrant workers

Central China's Hubei Province set up its first legal aid center on Monday for young migrant workers from outside the province in Wuhan, the provincial capital.

The center's service hotlines and website have also been opened Monday.

Major sponsors of the center included the provincial judiciary bureau, construction bureau and the provincial leading group for juvenile delinquency prevention and control.

The center will provide legal aid for transient workers taking jobs in the city's districts above county level when their legitimate rights and interests come under attack, according to Yang Benlong, deputy director of the center.

The center will offer legal training and consulting services for the migrant workers, help them to demand payments that are defaulted by employers and receive complaints about right infringements, Yang added.

Similar legal centers will be established gradually in other cities of Hubei, so as to build a provincial web of legal aid services for young migrant workers, according to Yang.

Statistics show that there are more than two million transient workers in midsize and larger cities in Hubei, including about 500,000 in the provincial capital of Wuhan.

Hubei is also a major migrant workers exporter, with more than four million people working outside the province.
