A Medlar Festival is scheduled to be held in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, said a provincial official in Beijing Friday.

Zhang Laiwu, vice-governor of the autonomous region told a press conference that the Fourth Ningxia, China Medlar Festival will open on August 8-10 in Zhong Ning County. Zhong Ning County is known as the "hometown of medlar in China".

More than 500 medlar dealers will gather at the festival and discuss how to promote the products, Han Shanning, chief of the local forestry administration said.

Medlar, originated from Ningxia, has been used in medicine for 2,000 years in China. Ningxia has a 600-year history of planting medlar.

Researchers said medlar is proved to have various microelements benefits to the health of human beings and can help improve immunity, protect the liver and postpone caducity.

Ningxia's output of medlar accounts for 42 per cent of the country's total and the country's 65 per cent of exports comes from Ningxia.
