Mexico surprised Argentina 1-0 in the Copa America on Saturday night, scoring on Ramon Morales' bending free kick in the ninth minute.

Morales sent his shot into the upper right corner and goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri never had a chance as the Mexicans beat Argentina for the first time in 14 years.

In Saturday's other game, Uruguay beat Ecuador 2-1.

Referee Marcio Rezende called the free kick after Argentina's Luis Gonzalez brought down striker Jesus Arellano with a slide tackle from behind.

Argentina dominated much of the game, replicating the attacking style that lifted it to its opening six-goal victory over Ecuador, but couldn't get through Mexico's defense.

Mexico and Uruguay share first place in Group B with four points. Argentina trails with three, followed by Ecuador with none.

Manchester United striker Diego Forlan and Carlos Bueno scored for Uruguay.

After a scoreless first half, Forlan made a solo run up the middle and scored from 23 yards away in the 61st minute.

Ecuador replacement forward Franklin Salas tied it in the 73rd on a cross from Ulises de la Cruz before Carlos Bueno scored in the 79th, poking in a rebound over prone goalkeeper Giovanny Ibarra for his second goal of the tournament.

The victory was the 99th in Copa history for Uruguay, which plays Argentina at Piura on Tuesday.
