Nazef picked to form new Egyptian government
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has named outgoing Minister of State for Telecommunications and Information Ahmed Nazef to form a new cabinet, state television reported Friday. This came during a meeting between Mubarak and Nazef, the report said. "Mubarak also accepted the resignation of Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Obeid and his cabinet members," said the TV, adding that Mubarak thanked Obeid and his cabinet for their performances in office. Earlier in the day, Obeid's cabinet offered its resignation after holding an emergency meeting at its headquarter in Cairo. According to leading Egyptian newspaper al-Ahram dated on July 10, Nazef will form his cabinet within 48 hours and ministers of national defense, foreign affairs, interior and justice will be named by Mubarak. Local analysts said that 52-year-old Nazif would be the first prime minister in Egypt without experience in the economic field since 1987. The prime minister-designate graduated from Cairo University in 1973 with a degree in engineering, and three years later, he obtained a master degree in electric engineering in the same university. In 1983, he got a doctorate in computer engineering at McGill University in Canada. |
