        Grewcock banned for stamping

England lock Danny Grewcock will miss next week's World Cup final rematch with Australia after being suspended for six weeks.

Grewcock was cited for stamping on the hand of New Zealand centre Daniel Carter in Saturday's second test, which the All Blacks won 36-12 to complete a 2-0 series win.

Grewcock's team mate Simon Shaw, however, who was sent off after 11 minutes of the match, was cleared to play after escaping a ban for kneeing New Zealand lock Keith Robinson in the back.

Woodward was incensed with Shaw's sending-off, which was prompted by a touch judge, arguing it was harsh and settled the match. Robinson himself said: "I didn't know what had happened... I can't say he hurt me in any way."

The England coach, however, refused to defend Grewcock.

He pleaded not guilty on Sunday but the International Rugby Board's judiciary committee disagreed and banned him for six weeks, ruling him out of the clash with Australia.

Woodward described Grewcock's action as "reckless".

Grewcock was sent off for stamping during the first test of England's 1998 tour and missed the second test, and he also missed the one-off test in Wellington last year because he had been banned in England for punching.
