        (Xinhua)
        Updated: 2004-04-17 15:31

Located at the riverside of the Jialing River, Jiangbei district of southwestern Chongqing Municipality, Chongqing Tianyuan Chemical Industry Plant mainly produces basic chemicals, with an annual producing capability of caustic soda of about 60,000 tons.

Besides caustic soda, products of Tianyuan includes chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, liquid chlorine, carbon tetrachloride, ferric chloride, silicon tetrachloride and hypochlorite, and seasonings such as gourmet powder, sauce and chicken gourmet powder.

As one of the largest chemical plant producing caustic soda in southwestern China, Tianyuan Chemical Industry Plant was first founded in Shanghai and moved to Chongqing during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945). Before the chlorine leaking accident, the plant had planed to move to the industrial park in Wanzhou District by the end of 2006. With an investment of one billion yuan (120.5 million US dollars), the caustic soda production capacity of the new plant will reach 100,000 tons. And after 2010, the production scale of caustic soda will reach over 200,000 tons.

Another chlorine leaking accident occurred on Feb. 14 this year in the plant.
