U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has arrived in Baghdad on the eve of the anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq, according to an AFP journalist travelling in his delegation.

Powell was due to meet with U.S. and Iraqi officials.

Powell arrived in Iraq from Kuwait City, where he held talks with Kuwaiti officials on the first leg of a Gulf tour that will also take in Saudi Arabia.

Citing security reasons, the U.S. State Department has refused to discuss even the basics of Powell's itinerary.

The topics will cover the situation in Iraq, the Middle East peace process and reform in the Arab world, according to an official who declined to say exactly who Powell would be meeting or the timing of the talks.

Powell arrived in the region after his visit Thursday to Pakistan, which followed stops in Afghanistan and India.
