Market hungry for real spiritual food
        ( 2004-01-10 00:20) (China Daily)

Looking at the current situation of book selection, readers will find that although they can easily access a great deal of reading materials, few of them are worth the reading, since under the exquisite cover lies poor content.

China's production of such spiritual foods is plagued with some bad habits.

First, books published on the same or similar topics accounts for most of these.

Some publishers take advantage of the hottest news in town to produce books. Under this circumstance, considerations for quality are sacrificed to save time. For example, after China's successful launch of the spacecraft Shenzhou V, different kinds of books on space flight flooded book stores. But in many of them, statistics or facts were inaccurate.

Another problem is that book content has become increasingly low-brow so as to attract attention and rake in money. Some books use very vulgar titles or carry sex and violence content

Another genre of books about how to realize one's aspiration or reach success, also called self-help books, take a big part of sales in bookstores. Many of these books are similar copies or translations from foreign editions. It doesn't matter if the content is poor, the method is effective since publishers like to produce these kinds of books only if they can make money.

However,in these circumstances, a writer cannot express what he or she really wants to say. Many of them have made compromises in the name of commercial expediency. Planners and book sellers set up the framework of a book in line with the market demand and leave the details to the writers. Then after excessive and well-plotted publicity, the book comes to the market. It is a production of commodity rather than spirit.

Book writers and publishers should be more responsible in producing books that can stimulate creativity and elevate people's spiritual world.
