        ( 2003-12-01 09:38) (Xinhua)

Private enterprises involved in science and technology have witnessed speedy growth in northwest China's Shaanxi Province in recent years, and have become a major force for local hi-tech advancement and exports.

By the end of 2002, the province had 9,959 private technology enterprises, which earned more than 65.33 billion yuan (US$7.8 billion ) in total income in 2002, according to the local science and technology department.

A growing number of local private technology companies are expanding their businesses, noted the department.

The number of those each having more than one million yuan ( some $120,000) in annual income has reached 1,966, with those each having more than 10 million yuan (about $1.2 million) in annual income hitting 491 and those with more than 100 million yuan ($12 million) reaching 57.

More than 330,000 people are now employed by local private technology businesses, which reaped a combined 3.52 billion yuan ( approximately US$430 million ) in profits in 2002 and paid 2.3 billion yuan (nearly $280 million) in taxes.

In 2002, some 158,000 technicians engaged in technology research and development in private businesses developed 6,076 new products, 958 of which have been patented.
