Private technology enterprises doing well in China's inland province ( 2003-12-01 09:38) (Xinhua) Private enterprises involved
in science and technology have witnessed speedy growth in northwest China's
Shaanxi Province in recent years, and have become a major force for local
hi-tech advancement and exports.
By the end of 2002, the province had 9,959 private technology enterprises,
which earned more than 65.33 billion yuan (US$7.8 billion ) in total income in
2002, according to the local science and technology department.
A growing number of local private technology companies are expanding their
businesses, noted the department.
The number of those each having more than one million yuan ( some $120,000)
in annual income has reached 1,966, with those each having more than 10 million
yuan (about $1.2 million) in annual income hitting 491 and those with more than
100 million yuan ($12 million) reaching 57.
More than 330,000 people are now employed by local private technology
businesses, which reaped a combined 3.52 billion yuan ( approximately US$430
million ) in profits in 2002 and paid 2.3 billion yuan (nearly $280 million) in
taxes.
In 2002, some 158,000 technicians engaged in technology research and
development in private businesses developed 6,076 new products, 958 of which
have been patented.
