An accident at an illegal sand mine in southwestern China killed 11 people,
including villagers who had tried to rescue the person buried by the initial
sand collapse, Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.
The sand collapsed when a villager blew up gunpowder in the mine Tuesday
afternoon, in Guizhou province's Xingren County. The area is about 1,700
kilometers (1,000 miles) southwest of Shanghai.
The villager was immediately buried. Fellow villagers rushed to the site, and
two ensuing sand cave-ins buried 15 of them.
A government rescue team pulled six people from the sand, but one of them
later died at a hospital, the report said.
