Sand collapse kills 11 in SW China ( 2003-11-14 10:03) (Xinhua)
A sand collapse in a sand mine Tuesday in Xingren County of southwest China's
Guizhou Province killed 11 people and injured 5.
A villager from Luowei Village of Xingren blew up gunpowder in the sand mine
at 6:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and caused the sand collapse. The villager was
buried in the sand immediately. Fellow villagers rushed to the site for rescue
but ensuing two collapses buried 15 of them.
The local government sent a rescue team to the sand mine at once and saved
six people out of the sand by 9:30 pm that day. But one of them died later in
hospital and three of the other five were seriously injured and two lightly
injured.
Ten bodies of the buried villagers have been found. The sand mine was run
without permit, government officials said.
