Alcatel expands broadband strategy ( 2003-11-13 10:24) (China Daily)
Alcatel, the world's leading telecommunications infrastructure supplier, announced recently that its latest global strategy is to develop seamless services while the strategy in China is to continue its expanding business and help push the nation to become a global leader in broadband technology innovation. According to Christian Reinaudo, president of Alcatel Asia Pacific, the company is now dedicated to developing its seamless services which will enable people to become connected anywhere at any time. "With the progress of the technology and the enlarged user base, Alcatel does see a continuous decline in communication costs," Reinaudo said. "The technology innovations plus the end-user demand pushes the creation of seamless services." The company regards China as the hotbed for innovative broadband applications because the country has seen tremendous growth in the information technology industry over the past few years. China is the world's largest telecom market in terms of numbers of mobile and fixed phone subscribers. It is set to become the world's largest broadband access market, with 10 million broadband users so far. Alcatel aims to expand its business by integrating its own products and those of partners, transforming itself to an integrated communication solution provider. All telecom carriers in China - China Telecom, China Mobile, China Netcom, China Unicom, China Railcom and China Satcom - have forged co-operative relations with Alcatel. Alcatel Shanghai Bell (ASB), Alcatel's largest company in the region, has provided fully integrated telecommunications solutions for an 800-kilometre oil pipeline in Pakistan. "We are seeking partners in other sectors such as oil and gas, railways, education, airports and government, and pushing forward China's telecom industry," Reinaudo said. Alcatel is strong in application development especially in the third-generation (3G) sector. The 3G applications so far available in ASB include live TV, MP3 downloading and video streaming. In another development, ASB yesterday inked a memorandum of co-operation with Intel to jointly develop mobile Internet solutions based on the Linux operation system.
