Life returns to normal as floodwater leavesc ( 2003-11-12 21:25) (Xinhua) As of Wednesday morning,
floodwater has been evacuated from all the 135 villages that were submerged for
over one month along the Yellow River in east China's Shandong Province,
according to local officials.
Liu Xueshan, deputy head of Dongming County, said local people have gradually
returned to normal life as the floodwater wanes and makes way for relief
materials distribution and building renovation in the flood-affected areas.
On Sept. 18 and 20, the inner dike on the Yellow River in Lankao County of
central China's Henan Province was broken into three by the rising waters.
As a result, 135 villages in neighboring Dongming County of Shandong Province
were flooded with more than 90,000 people affected.
In addition, the rushing floodwater cut off the roads which link the villages
to the outside, making rescue work difficult.
On Oct. 29, the last breach on the inner dikes along the Lankao County
section was successfully stopped and the water level in the flooded areas
dropped rapidly.
Liu said that floodwater remained on some farmland and local villagers are
busy sowing while pumping out the water.
