Nissan launches worldwide recall ( 2003-11-04 22:12) (China Daily) Japan-based Nissan Motor Co Ltd has launched the largest recall campaign in its history, targeting 2.56 million sedans and mini vans around the world.
With the exception of the China-made Sunny vehicles, all the recalls are expected to qualify for a free overhaul if owners submit applications to local dealers, sources from Nissan's Beijing office told China Daily yesterday. The recall is a result of a defect inside the engine sensor which could lead to ignition failure or going dead during operation, according to a release posted on the Nissan Motor (China) Ltd website. Twenty casesof shutdown during driving have been reported, according to a Xinhua report. However, no accidents have yet been caused by the defect, according to Kaneko Shigeru, deputy general manager of Nissan Motor (China) Ltd. Shigeru said the company took the action as an important step of after-sale service, adding the recall is a precautionary measure. Nissan is preparing replacement parts and the free overhauls are expected to be in full swing by mid-December. Along with the affected vehicles on the Chinese mainland, the recall includes 1.03 million from Japan, 700,000 from the United States, 450,000 from European countries and 370,000 from other countries and regions which were produced between 1998 and May 2003.
