Report: Lindh murder knife to be analyzed in UK
( 2003-09-15 10:12) (Agencies) The knife used by an unknown
man to stab Sweden's Foreign Minister Anna Lindh to death will probably be sent
to a forensic lab in Britain for analysis, Swedish TT news agency reported
Sunday.
Police have established that the knife found at the downtown Stockholm
department store where Lindh was attacked Wednesday is the murder weapon, but
have found no fingerprints on it.
The knife, a standard model used by thousands of Swedes for outdoor and
handicraft purposes, has a steel blade and red plastic handle and retails for
less than $10.
Swedish police hope scientists at The Forensic Science Center (FSS) in
Birmingham, which has more advanced equipment than the best crime labs in
Sweden, will find traces of the assailant's genetic code, or DNA, on the knife,
TT said.
"They have the very latest when it comes to DNA technology and can perform
analyzes on minimal cell samples. We don't have that technology yet," Olof
Egerstedt, head of Sweden's central forensic lab SKL, told TT.
No one at police headquarters in Stockholm was immediately available for
comment. The switchboard was jammed for hours after police published unedited
pictures of the main suspect.
Earlier Sunday, police said they had not identified the man in the pictures
taken from footage filmed by a surveillance camera in the department store just
minutes before the attack.
