Medical group to make major moves
        ( 2003-09-15 09:39) (China Daily)

Siemens AG, Medical Solution (Siemens Medical) will strengthen its presence in the fledgling but promising Chinese market by enhancing its local manufacturing and research and development (R&D) capabilities, in addition to increasing local sourcing, some of the group's executives said at the weekend.

"We will make our facilities in China not only manufacturing bases for the group, but also research and development centres in the future," said Rolf Hupke, president and chief executive officer of Siemens Shanghai Medical Equipment Ltd (SSME).

When Siemens Medical first launched SSME in 1992, the Shanghai facility was defined as an assembly plant. Now, Siemens is introducing more R&D capabilities to the factory so it can roll out Computed Tomography (CT) products for both the local and international markets, according to Hupke.

Nowadays, up to about 40 per cent of SSME's products are exported to Siemens' global markets. The figure is set to rise in the future as the factory strengthens its local presence in terms of both manufacturing and R&D abilities, Hupke added.

Also to enhance its presence in China, Siemens Medical will increase its sourcing of material from the local market. According to Siemens Medical's CT boss, the group will just about double its local sourcing in China, in terms of value volume per year.

SSME's local sourcing will almost double in the near future, according to sources.
