Blast destroys US military car, wounds soldier
        ( 2003-09-14 15:30) (Agencies)

An explosion destroyed a U.S. military car west of Baghdad on Sunday, apparently seriously wounding one soldier, witnesses said.

The blast hit a Humvee vehicle in a U.S. convoy near the restive town of Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, they said. One soldier lay motionless on the side of the road near the Humvee after the attack as other soldiers combed the area.

It was not clear if the blast was caused by a roadside bomb or a rocket-propelled grenade, the favored weapons of anti-American guerrillas.

There was no immediate comment from the U.S. military.

Guerrillas have killed 71 U.S. soldiers since Washington declared an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1. U.S. officials blame the attacks on loyalists of ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and foreign Islamic fighters.
