Official: Economic ties not be influenced by political differences ( 2003-08-13 09:53) (Xinhua)
Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), says economic cooperation across the Taiwan Straits should not be influenced by political differences. The CPPCC leader made the statement Tuesday while meeting an industry union delegation from Taiwan. The delegation was committed to promoting economic ties and direct links of trade, mail and transport across the Taiwan Straits, he noted, saying this is the objective development trend of the relations across the straits as well as the aspirations of the compatriots on both sides of the straits. Jia said that the Chinese government would continue to encourage Taiwan compatriots to invest on the mainland and safeguard their personal rights and interests according to law. The Law concerning the Protection of Investments of Taiwan Compatriots and its detailed rules was adopted by the National People's Congress (NPC) on March 5, 1994. According to Jia, the sustained, rapid development of the economy on the Chinese mainland offers opportunities for Taiwan compatriots to invest. National unity would not be realized until there was complete reunification across the straits, he said. If the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits drew together and made joint efforts, Jia said, a unified, powerful andcivilized China would make still greater contributions to world peace and development.
