Bayern prepared to accept offers for Elber ( 2003-08-13 09:39) (Agencies)
Bayern Munich are prepared to sell Brazilian striker Elber before his
contract expires at the end of the season now Dutch striker Roy Makaay has
arrived at the club, commercial manager Uli Hoeness said on Tuesday.
"If he (Elber) comes to us and says he's unsatisfied, then we'll have to sit
down and talk about it," Hoeness told Munich's Abendzeitung newspaper when asked
about speculation the striker might leave the German champions before his
contract expires.
"Just imagine this situation: Makaay scores four goals on Saturday against
Bochum and Claudio Pizarro scores three goals -- then we'll have to sit down and
talk. I'm ready to talk."
Even though 31-year-old Elber was the Bundesliga's joint top scorer last
season with 21 goals, German media have speculated that he or Claudio Pizarro
would be relegated to the substitutes bench by Makaay's arrival from Deportivo
Coruna.
The Dutchman, top scorer in Spain's first division last season with 29 goals,
was the most expensive signing in Bayern's history when he joined the club on a
four-year contract for 18.75 million euros ($21.2 million) last week.
Elber himself has said he would consider a move, possibly to Hertha Berlin,
though more likely when his contract expires.
