No goals for Makaay on Bayern debut ( 2003-08-13 09:39) (Agencies)
Dutch striker Roy Makaay made his Bayern Munich debut on Tuesday as the German champions beat second division Nuremberg 2-0 in a friendly.
While not lacking in effort, he had only one real chance, which came in the 35th minute and was saved by Nuremberg goalkeeper Darius Kampa. "The first game is always difficult," said Makaay, who was top scorer in the Spanish league last season with 29 goals. Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld substituted Makaay in the 68th minute and said the 28-year-old should make his Bundesliga debut against VfL Bochum on Saturday. "If he doesn't get injured, he will play," Hitzfeld said. Bayern and Deportivo fought for weeks before reaching a deal on Makaay and the battle looks set to continue. Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Tuesday's Bild daily that he felt Deportivo had used unfair means to try to stop Makaay from leaving. "We want an official investigation," said Rummenigge, who told the newspaper that he had alerted FIFA's legal department. Bayern, who completed their fourth domestic league and Cup double last season, hope Makaay can help them in their bid to make up for last year's shock first-stage exit from the Champions League. Makaay's signing means either Brazilian Elber or Peru's Claudio Pizarro could be relegated to the bench. Elber made a point on Tuesday by opening the scoring for Bayern just before halftime and playing well throughout. Germany midfielder Sebastian Deisler completed the victory after he break.
