        ( 2003-07-09 12:31) (newsphoto)

Soldiers carry bags of sand to reinforce the dyke at Xiakoumen section of the Qiujia Lake in Ban'gang Town in east China's Anhui Province July 8, 2003. The dyke at Xiakoumen was in danger due to heavy rains bursting along the Huaihe River area Tuesday morning. With the joint efforts by local residents and soldiers, the dangerous situation is under control. [Xinhua]

The valiant efforts of armed police who repaired a collapsing dyke in East China yesterday evening, saved more than 1 million people at risk from serious flooding. The collapsed dyke on the Chuhe River, which flows across Anhui and Jiangsu provinces, threatened the Beijing-Shanghai railway artery and Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, 50 kilometres away, said officials with the Anhui flood control department.
