The valiant efforts of armed police who
repaired a collapsing dyke in East China yesterday evening, saved more
than 1 million people at risk from serious flooding. The collapsed dyke on
the Chuhe River, which flows across Anhui and Jiangsu provinces,
threatened the Beijing-Shanghai railway artery and Nanjing, capital of
Jiangsu Province, 50 kilometres away, said officials with the Anhui flood
