As a teenager, Liu was greatly impressed by the famous literati Lu Xun's writings, especially the author's cynicism with Chinese reality, like some absurd expressions from Lu Xun's literary work The Story of Ah Q. In 1974, Zhao started to create woodcut illustrations for Lu Xun's short stories and essays.
