A giant panda presented by the central government to Macao died on Sunday night, China News Service reported on Monday.
According to the Civil and Municipal Affairs Bureau of Macao, the panda named Xinxin, which would have been 6-years-old next month, was diagnosed with renal dysfunction during a routine health inspection at the end of May. Despite medical treatment, the condition of the panda worsened and it died at 8:18 pm on Sunday. The initial analysis showed the panda died of acute renal failure and related ailments. Experts said it is rare for a panda to die of kidney failure.
The giant panda was given to Macao by the central government as a gift to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Macao's reunification in December 2009.
