China rejects 226 food shipments in April

        (Xinhua) Updated: 2014-05-29 20:43

BEIJING - Chinese authorities found 226 batches of substandard food imports and rejected them from the domestic market in April, the country's top quality supervisor announced on Thursday.

Quality failure, microbial contamination and substandard additives were the main problems with the imports from 35 countries and regions, said Lu Chunming, an official with the the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

The rejected food fell into 15 categories, mostly beverages, cakes and biscuits, as well as dairy products, Lu said at an AQSIQ press conference.

The AQSIQ also found five shipments of substandard cosmetics imported from four countries, the official added.

All substandard products were either sent back or destroyed, according to Lu.
